The Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado honored members for innovative landscape designs at its annual Excellence in Landscape Awards Banquet in January.

This formal water feature, designed by Designs by Sundown and framed by colorful plantings, won an Award of Excellence (best use of annuals).
This formal, terraced water feature by Lifescape Associates Inc. won a Grand Award ($20,000 to $50,000).

The group gave a total of 59 awards in several categories, including water features.

This Award of Excellence (over $100,000) winning country estate, designed by Designs by Sundown, features an extensive network of backyard ponds, pools, waterfalls and streams.

“These winning landscapes are excellent examples of the newest landscape designs and cutting-edge trends,” said Kristen Fefes, the 700-plus-member group’s executive director.

This naturalistic, 45-foot waterfall in a mountain setting won CourMeg Landscape Design a Grand Award ($20,000 to $50,000).

Lifescapes Associates Inc. captured the Water Features category for a formal fountain in Cherry Hills Village, Colo. The challenge was to build a garden-level terrace featuring a formal fountain as a focal point, while maintaining views to the west. The walls flanking the water feature are constructed of limestone to match the house, and the pumps are adjustable and independently controlled so the client can change the look and intensity of water flow at the touch of a button.

This Designs by Sundown Grand Award (over $100,000) winning project features a firepit, lagoon swimming pool and an area for entertaining.

Designs by Sundown also captured Water Features honors for its project in Greenwood Village, Colo. The project incorporated glistening, flowing streams, cascading falls and tranquil ponds. The project is viewable from within the house, as well as outdoors. The system is powered by two 5-HP pumps.

The City of Montrose, Colo., contracted this feature to mimic a nearby river and valley, beautifying a public plaza and winning an Award of Excellence (under $20,000).

CourMeg Landscape Design captured Water Features honors for its project in Kittredge, Colo. The client wanted a natural-looking waterfall for a mountain setting on Clear Creak. CourMeg enhanced an existing natural rock area and created a 45-foot, 450-gallons-per-minute waterfall.

Ivy Street Design Group Inc. won an Award of Excellence ($15,000 to $50,000) for this project, featuring a pergola, flagstone paths, perennials and a copper fountain.

Also honored in the Water Feature category, the City of Montrose won for a water feature in its Centennial Plaza. The feature represents Black Canyon and the Gunnison River and was built to honor the Gunnison Tunnel, the most important project in Montrose’s history. The feature was built from materials acquired from Black Canyon.
