Joe Mackey, owner of Aston Oaks Golf Course in North Bend, Ohio, saw one of Dan Meyer’s water features at a local gas station. He approached Meyer, owner of Meyer Aquascapes in Harrison, Ohio, about constructing a large water feature at his course to enhance his new building’s beauty. Mackey thought that adding a backdrop for pictures and social gatherings would help rent the reception hall by making it the only place in the area designed for weddings with a water feature.

Meyer’s four-man crew completed the job in seven days. They used two trackhoes and two Bobcats. To help keep the project moving, Meyer said they moved all the materials to the site before the build.

“Stone materials were found on the property during the initial golf course construction and set aside for future use,” he said. “When the project began, I went with the owner to select and tag all the rocks and boulders of my choice. We picked through 500 to 600 tons of rock looking for the very special ones. As a rock connoisseur, I was in heaven picking from all that rock.”

Setting the large, limestone boulders, some more than 3 tons each, on the extremely steep slope using heavy equipment created an inherent challenge for the team. “This kind of work can be extremely challenging and dangerous at times,” Meyer said. “Each boulder must be precisely installed to give the feature a natural look. Extra caution must be used when operating heavy equipment on such an extreme slope.”

The completed water feature is a 50-foot-by-20-foot pondless waterfall located just outside a newly constructed club house, restaurant and reception hall on the golf course property. Thousands of weekly visitors enjoy the pondless feature, and it inevitably attracted more attention to the reception hall as a backdrop for wedding pictures.
