International Professional Pond Contractors Association and a dozen of its Topgun Contractor members from around the country recently completed its fourth annual Ponditat for Humanity pond renovation project. This year’s recipient was Ashland Terrace, a retirement center for elderly women in Lexington, Ky.

The project, which took place June 25-27, involved rebuilding the center’s high-maintenance, failing, leaking water feature. When the 9-year-old pond started demonstrating equipment problems and water leakage, the center’s management became hard-ressed to continue its operation.

“We know that people really love ponds,” said Dave Jones, IPPCA’s executive director. “In previous years, we have helped disabled people trying to save their ponds and fish. Ashland Terrace has these huge beautiful koi and goldfish that have become part of these ladies’ lives. I am thankful for the opportunity to help keep it all going.”

The pond has become a meeting place for the residents, many of whom spend hours enjoying the fish and local frogs that took up residence in the pond. The residents took a great interest in the renovation project, checking up on the workers continuously, said Gloria Jones, IPPCA’s secretary/treasurer.

“It is very fulfilling to know what you are doing is appreciated,” Gloria Jones said.

IPPCA supporters such as Atlantic Water Gardens, American Pond, Aqua Control, Aquatic Logic, Danner Mfg., Dow Chemical Co., Easy Pro Mfg., Enviroscapes, Ewing Irrigation, Fielding Pumps, Firestone Specialty Products, Graystone Creations and Winston Products supplied all the hardware and equipment. Local suppliers H2O Designs and Tracy Rock and Gravel supplied additional materials. The completed project’s estimated value is $20,000.
