| Consumer demand drives Kloubec Koi Farm to dig 15 to 20 new mud ponds. | Kloubec Koi Farm in Amana, Iowa, completed an expansion project in late 2009 to satisfy an increase in demand for its butterfly koi and straight fin koi. The expansion project entailed building about 15 to 20 new mud ponds on the 80-acre koi farm, bringing the total number of koi ponds up to about 100.
Several of the koi ponds are designated specifically for Kloubec Koi Farm’s high-end, award-winning koi bloodlines. Kloubec Koi Farm co-owner Nick Kloubec said the special focus on high-end koi breeds stems from recent successes, such as winning the Baby Grand Champion award for its kohaku at the Mid-Atlantic Koi Club’s 2009 Koi Show.
“The idea is to provide a healthy American alternative that rivals import quality,” Kloubec said.
The expansion project included increasing the koi quarantine facility from 100,000 gallons to 125,000 gallons. Koi fish remain in the quarantine facility for at least two weeks before shipping to ensure optimum health.
