Backyard Getaway, a Bradenton, Fla.-based pond contractor and pond supply retailer, held its Fifth Annual Parade of Ponds Tour on May 8. The event benefitted Honor Sanctuary Animal Rescue of University Park, Fla.

“The purpose of the event is not only to help a local charity, but it’s also to show people what they can do in their own back yard and how nice it is to have a water feature,” said Lisa Burns, who co-owns Backyard Getaway with her husband, Dave.

The pond tour included 10 houses with water features of various types and sizes as well as an after-tour garden party. Each water garden on the pond tour either was installed professionally by Backyard Getaway or was a do-it-yourself design made with equipment purchased from Backyard Getaway. The Annual Parade of Ponds Tour aims to provide water garden and koi enthusiasts a chance to exchange information, share inspiration and see the wide variety of water features.

“People respond very well to the tour,” Burns said. “A lot of people call me after and say they can’t wait for the next tour.”

This year’s pond tour raised $1,100 for Honor Sanctuary, a nonprofit, no-kill animal rescue serving Manatee and Sarasota counties. The rescue's mission is to help the suffering of stray, abandoned and abused dogs and cats.

Honor Sanctuary plans to use the money to install a dog drinking and bathing fountain at one of its facilities. Backyard Getaway will design and install the fountain, a pondless water feature made out of an old fire hydrant, Burns said.
