The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reported in mid-May an outbreak of spring viraemia of carp in England. A population of ornamental goldfish (Carassius auratus) imported from China was sampled and tested for SVC at the point of arrival in the United Kingdom, according to the OIE. Officials took the sample as part of a routine surveillance program on imports of SVC-susceptible fish from third countries.
The OIE reported that this was a legal import, and the consignment -- 35 boxes containing 9,961 live fish -- arrived with appropriate health certification from the Chinese authorities declaring freedom from SVC. After arrival, the importer held the consignment in secure quarantine to allow the fish to acclimatize after shipment.
When the sample proved positive for SVC, officials destroyed all the fish in the secure isolation, according to the OIE. Then the site was disinfected.
OIE considers the case resolved and will submit no more reports. The Chinese authorities were informed of the SVC-positive result in the imported fish.
