Ozark Fisheries Inc., an ornamental goldfish and koi breeder with farms in Indiana and Missouri, reported in late October that it now uses spawning and indoor hatching facilities to breed its koi and butterfly koi.
The spawning facility allows Ozark Fisheries' production staff more quality control with the ability to pair up the best males and females to get a better overall outcome in koi colors, said Larry Cleveland, president of Ozark Fisheries.
The indoor hatching facility allows for better hatching rates with fewer brood fish needed to produce the same number of fry, Cleveland added. The fry also acclimate better in the ponds, which mean more fish for the company’s customers, according to Cleveland.
