Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, 5 p.m. EST
Songbird Essentials of Mexico, Mo., acquired Looker Products of Milford, Ill., effective Oct. 31, according to company president Mel Toellner. Looker manufactures a variety of wild bird and garden products, including birdfeeders, bird and bat houses, birdbaths and squirrel feeders in Illinois.
Songbird Essentials plans to make top-selling Looker products available through its sister Gold Crest Distributing business, also based in Mexico, and continue to sell the product directly from the Looker production facility in Milford, according to Toellner.
Carolyn Looker sold Looker to Songbird Essentials so she could retire. Under the deal, Looker’s production and customer service staff will continue to operate at the Milford facility.
“I have enjoyed the birding business and believe that Looker Products has a promising future under the leadership of Mel and the rest of the folks at Songbird Essentials and Gold Crest Distributing,” Looker wrote to customers.
Prior to the deal, Gold Crest held its annual Wild Bird Expo event in Mexico, Mo. More than 500 retailers attended the Wild Bird Expo, up 20 percent from 2010, and more than 100 vendors participated, up 25 percent from 2010, Gold Crest reported.
