Dawning of Aquaria 2006 Approaches

The second Aquaria, an international exhibition for China’s ornamental aquatic industry, takes place in Guangzhou, China, Sept. 7-10. The show is designed not only to showcase Chinese aquatic offerings to the international trade, but also to provide international countries access to the domestic Chinese market, according to organizers.

The event is organized by CMP Asia Trade Fairs Pte Ltd. of Singapore, which is better known for sponsoring Aquarama in Singapore. The two events alternate, with Aquarama occurring during odd-numbered years and Aquaria in even-numbered years.

This year’s Aquaria will also feature InterGarden 2006, a sub-event that focuses on water gardens and ponds, and a new product showcase. This will mark the first time InterGarden will take place in conjunction with Aquaria; the water garden event made its debut last year at Aquarama. An expected highlight will be a large water garden display.

Confirmed exhibiters include Hai Feng, Tetra, Guangzhou Qian Hu Aquarium & Pet Accessories, the Malaysian Department of Fisheries and breeders of Asian arowanas (dragonfish) from Singapore and Indonesia. At least 66 exhibitors have signed on so far.

In addition, organizers plan a full-day tour of area fish farms on Saturday, Sept. 9. Expected stops include the Tung Hoi Farm (goldfish), the Guangzhou Discus Farm, the Luo Chong Farm (fresh water) and the Guangdong Guan Yang Agriculture Trade Development Centre/Ornamental Fish Research Centre.

The first two days of the event will be restricted to the trade, and the final two days will be open to the general public.

Also planned are trade seminars in English (sometimes translated) that will focus on trade issues related to China. Topics include import, export and manufacturing matters and market trends and statistics.

Speakers include Dr. Krishen Rana of the Institute of Aquaculture at the University of Stirling, Scotland, on trade statistics into and out of China; Zhang Ming Yu, secretary general of the China Society of Fisheries, on the general status of the Chinese ornamental aquatic industry; Xu Pin Zhang, vice president and standing director of the Guangdong Province Aquarists’ Assn. on trends in aquarium fish keeping in China; and Jackie Chan, general manager of Tung Hoi Aquarium Co. in Hong Kong, on trading with the West.

Organizers are also offering add-on tours (vacation, not business) to Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
