Care Requirements: Goldfish prefer cooler water temperatures. Common varieties can remain in an outdoor pond over winter provided the pond does not freeze solid, and it retains an open place in the ice for gas exchange. They need 2' to 3' of unfrozen water below the ice as
Feeding: These scavengers always are mouthing at the pond bottom. They are best fed a standard Goldfish food.
Temperament: These peaceful fish will not bother other pond fish, but they will eat anything they can swallow.
Breeding: Goldifsh breed in the spring. Males develop "nuptual tubercles," which are white "pimples" on their gills and face. Males chase females and scatter thousands of eggs in plants.
Additional Information: Goldfish have been kept in China for more than a thousand years. There is some evidence that ancient Egyptians kept Goldfish in ponds for food. They likely represent the most common fish kept around the world.
