| Permeable hardscapes allow rainwater to return to the earth and appeal to clients' desires to green their outdoor environments. | As professional pond builders, we must diversify our offerings to survive challenging economic times. A natural outgrowth of pond building and installation is hardscaping. In the past, hardscaping consisted of patios and walkways. While this remains true, many clients want to keep up with the "green revolution." They are looking for ways to preserve their environment.
One big way manufacturers have responded to clients' desires to green their outdoor environments is by giving developing hardscape alternatives. Permeable paving is one option that allows people to traverse land while allowing rain to penetrate the earth and refill the water table.
The old way of doing paths was to pour concrete, which does not allow rainwater to return to the earth. Rainwater would make its way to our oceans, taking pesticides and herbicides with it.
Permeable paving emerged on the scene in a big way. Its forms include interlocking pavers or Flexi-pave, a mix of recycled car tires and stone. As Earth’s stewards, we need to keep abreast of the latest trends. The green movement is hot and keeping informed is vital.
How do you keep informed of the latest in consumer trends in the green industry and the pond world?
