| When pond and water feature contractors receive industry awards, there are several ways they can capitalize on the achievement. (Courtesy of IPPCA) | Trade associations normally recognize the outstanding work of those whose work exceeds the norm and is considered outstanding. For example, the California Landscape Contractors Association distributes awards annually to companies that achieve outstanding work on their projects. Once an award is given, the winning contractors are allowed to advertise their companies as “award winning.”
The International Professional Pond Companies Association recently distributed their annual awards to outstanding water feature contractors. Once a company achieves award-winning status, the award normally is hung up on a prominent wall at work, and the winner feels a sense of pride when the award is viewed.
There are other ways water feature contractors can capitalize on a worthy achievement. Contact your local news media -- including newspapers, television stations and magazines -- to run a story on the noteworthy project. Post a video on YouTube.
Whatever avenues are chosen, we must remember that winning an award is not a guarantee that publicity will come. We must be proactive to get the most from our awards.
How long does the glow of winning an award last? It depends on a few factors: Is the award a local or state award? Is it a national or international award? Who gave the award?
Crafting the language for the media is a great idea because they don not know our language. Do you have photos of you accepting the award? Do you have photos of the award itself? Take a look at what other companies do with their awards and the mileage they get from them.
No doubt about it, winning the recognition of your peers is humbling and a honor. How else can awards be used to further your business?
