With the holidays behind us and the days getting longer, you can feel the pond world's enthusiasm as we receive solicitations from manufacturers and koi producers. I recently received solicitations in the mail that some koi breeders have fish ready for purchase and available to be shipped to my door once they receive my order and payment.

Because many professional pond builders started out as landscapers and added pond building to their offerings, they might not know much about koi and other pond fish. Whether you are a beginner pond builder or you have several pond builds under your belt, you might wonder what to look for when buying koi and other pond fish.

To help pond builders who are not koi aficionados, perhaps some of the koi and other pond fish experts out there can answer these common questions:

1. What is your favorite source for koi?
2. Are Japanese fish better than domestic-bred koi?
3. Are goldfish better for water gardens, or can you successfully grow koi in a water garden?
