Concrete Art Demands Defensive Packing
By Wendy Bedwell-Wilson
Despite its virtually indestructible reputation, concrete can be fragile. That is why Hilda Jones, designer and co-owner of The Brookfield Co. in Ronggold, Ga., said she had to develop a creative and environmentally friendly solution for shipping her concrete garden art.
“We’re selling a higher-end concrete, so the product has to arrive in great shape,” Jones said. “Early on, we discovered that Dalton [Georgia] has lots of carpet and rug factories. I managed to connect with one of the manufacturing plants that agreed to provide boxes of rug pieces that we could use to cushion and wrap the rim of each planter.”
Besides using a reused product, the recycled carpeting also protected Jones’ pieces from damage during shipping and installation, she said. “It was defensive packing,” Jones said, “and it’s worked beautifully for us all these years.”
