Pond Businesses Supplement Winter Sales
By Emily Lambert
For many in the pond and water garden business, winter is a slow time of year. To supplement sales, some retailers reported adding to their existing assortment of products.
“In our local store, we bring in Christmas merchandise,” said Randy Stewart, general manager of Pondliner.com in Shawnee, Okla. “We tried fresh cut trees but that didn’t go over well because we are not a prime location. We do well with Christmas merchandise, though.”
Kansas City Pond & Water Gardening is considering the decorating business for the first time this year.
“It had not occurred to me, but my wife specifically mentioned a line of products to decorate ponds, such as floating Christmas trees,” said Bob Camarena, owner of the N. Kansas City, Mont.-based store.
Other pond professionals reported turning their winter focus to an established aquarium business for the winter months as well as closing-up shop to prepare for the next season.
